Clear Skies and Cool Nights: Perseid Meteor Shower Set to Dazzle in 2024
Calm weather is expected to provide perfect conditions for the Perseid meteor shower's peak from August 11-13 in New Jersey. With clear skies forecasted and temperatures in the 60s, stargazers could see 50-100 meteors per hour, with the best viewing between midnight and dawn. The Perseids will remain active through September 1, intersecting with the Delta Aquariid meteor shower.
Skywatchers in Cape May can savor the last major meteor shower of the summer. The Perseids are known for their swift, bright meteors, rivaled only by the Geminids in December. Both showers are famous for producing fireballs, which are larger and more vivid than typical meteors due to larger cometary particles.
For the best viewing experience, it's recommended to find a dark sky location and be patient, as meteors can appear at any time after 10 p.m. during the peak. The Perseids also intersect with the Delta Aquariid meteor shower, which continues through August 21, and will remain active until September 1. Keep in mind that while the meteors appear to come from various points in the sky, the Perseids trace back to the constellation Perseus, originating from debris left by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun every 135 years.
Golf Cart Accident at Wildwood Event Injures Five, Investigation Ongoing
A speed-governed golf cart at the Wildwood National Night Out event veered off its course, injuring five people. Fortunately, since the event took place during National Night Out, first responders were already on the scene and were able to provide immediate assistance to the victims. The Wildwood Police expressed their deep concern over the incident, noting that the low-speed golf cart, designed to simulate impaired driving, has been a longstanding feature of the event for over two decades. They extended their thoughts and prayers to those injured. The incident. involving a juvenile and a police officer is still under investigation, and authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information to reach out to Wildwood Police at 609-522-0222 or the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135.
Cape May Beachgoers Shocked by Unannounced Military Operation
Visitors to Cape May Beach and the nearby Cape May Ferry terminal were taken by surprise earlier in the week when a sudden military operation unfolded before their eyes. At around 2:45 PM, several military helicopters descended on the area, swarming over one of the ferries crossing the Delaware Bay.
The event continued for hours, with the helicopters hovering just above the boat and the speedboats maintaining a close watch. Eventually, the ferry, escorted by the helicopters and speedboats, turned around and headed back towards Delaware.
While no official statements have been made by the government organizations involved, it is widely believed that this was a military training exercise, similar to one that took place in 2019. During that exercise, the FBI conducted a large-scale operation on the Cape May Whale Watcher, where helicopters flew over the ship and agents practiced a hostage extraction mission by rappelling down ropes.
Diamondbacks Dominate Phillies Amid Injury Concerns, Winning 11-1
The Arizona Diamondbacks cruised to an 11-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, powered by Jake McCarthy's two home runs and Ketel Marte's 30th homer of the season. Despite injuries to Marte and pitcher Zac Gallen, Arizona secured their 14th win in 17 games, bolstering their wild-card prospects. The Phillies struggled, dropping to 4-5 on their Western road trip.
