NJ’s ‘Stop the Sting’ Project Sees Success in Controlling Jellyfish Populations

Carl Mattocks, president of the Berkeley Township Underwater Search & Rescue Squad, has been at the forefront of a project aimed at curbing the spread of clinging jellyfish in Jersey Shore waters. These jellyfish, notorious for their painful stings, have become more prevalent in the region’s bays and waterways over the past two decades.

The rescue squad, known for clearing debris and abandoned vessels from the shore, partnered with Montclair State University and the nonprofit Save Barnegat Bay in 2021 to develop a method for removing jellyfish during their early life stages. The team began scrubbing bulkheads and floating docks, hoping to disrupt the jellyfish's growth before they could mature into stinging adults. The project has shown significant results and plans are underway to expand the effort

Phillies’ Road Trip Ends on Sour Note with Loss to Diamondbacks

Cristopher Sanchez struggled in a 12-5 Phillies' loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing 12 hits and multiple runs. Despite a two-run lead, Sanchez couldn’t keep the Diamondbacks at bay, resulting in a series loss. The Phillies ended up losing both the four-game series and the seven-game season series against the Diamondbacks. After a challenging 4-6 road trip, which felt particularly grueling for manager Rob Thomson, the team returns home with a 69-49 record.
