New Cape May Exhibit Highlights Black Travel History and ‘The Green Book’

A new exhibit, Routes of Black Travel: ‘The Green Book’ in Cape May and Wildwood, explores how Black travelers navigated segregation during the Jim Crow era. Hosted at the Carroll Gallery in the Emlen Physick Estate, the exhibit highlights local businesses once listed in The Green Book, a travel guide that helped Black visitors find safe accommodations. The display includes historical hotels, Esso gas stations, and personal stories like that of John T. Nash, who built a motel that still operates today. Open through March 23, the exhibit offers a deeper look at Cape May’s Black history, with free admission.

Detective Mark Weeks, a retired New Jersey State Police major, has been appointed as a monitor for the West Wildwood Police Department while the chief of police is on leave pending retirement. Weeks will oversee daily operations, report to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, and maintain stability during the leadership transition. Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland called the move a proactive measure to ensure continued integrity and professionalism within the department.
