Lucy the Elephant Secures $500K Grant for Interior Renovations

Lucy the Elephant in Margate is set to undergo significant interior renovations thanks to a $500,000 grant secured by U.S. Senator Cory Booker. Originally named “Elephant Bazaar” when it was built in 1881, Lucy has survived numerous challenges over the years, including hurricanes, lightning strikes, demolition threats, and pandemics. For many, Lucy is as synonymous with the Jersey Shore as the Eiffel Tower is with Paris. The funds will be used to update the heating, air-conditioning, and fire suppression systems, as well as address other needed repairs. The renovations are expected to begin in late 2025, aligning with the construction of a new visitor center. Meanwhile, as we mentioned in a recent newsletter,  Ocean City’s Gillian’s Wonderland Pier is closing after 94 years.

New Jersey Secures Top Spot in Safety, Ranks Third Overall in Best States to Live

New Jersey residents often have mixed feelings about their state, but one thing remains certain: those who live there take immense pride in calling it home. Now, there's official recognition to back that sentiment, as New Jersey has been named the third-best state to live in for 2024 by WalletHub. The Garden State scored strong performances in safety, education, health, and quality of life. The state is recognized for its low crime rates, high median income, and access to outdoor activities. However, it fared poorly in affordability due to its high cost of living and expensive housing market.

Local Baseball Stars Train with Savannah Bananas, Earn Top Honors

Five young baseball players from Ocean County had the unique opportunity to hone their skills and learn the art of exhibition baseball this past week. These players, all members of the Stafford Hitmen travel baseball team, were among 900 talented athletes chosen to participate in an exclusive event in Cleveland, where they trained with the Savannah Bananas. The players, ranging from ages 9 to 10, earned notable accolades, including the Most Valuable Banana and Top Trickster awards. Adding to the excitement, Atlantic City's Kyshawn Wyman of Hit Nation Empire created a custom mix of baseball-themed music for the team, providing a special soundtrack as the boys entered the field.

Marlins' Offense Sparks 5-0 Victory Over Struggling Phillies

Jake Burger homered for the fourth straight game, and Valente Bellozo pitched seven scoreless innings as the Miami Marlins secured a 5-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Marlins’ offense, powered by home runs from Burger and Jesus Sanchez, helped Miami even the season series with Philadelphia. Phillies starter Taijuan Walker struggled in his return from the injured list, and the Phillies' offense continued to sputter with just four hits.
