A wildfire in Ocean County, called the Jones Road Forest Fire, has burned over 8,500 acres and threatened the decommissioned Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant. Though the plant no longer operates, it stores spent nuclear fuel in secure containers. A small fire ignited on the site but was quickly controlled. Thousands of residents have been displaced due to the fire’s rapid spread, with emergency crews working around the clock to contain the flames and protect critical infrastructure. Officials confirm the fuel storage remains safe, despite ongoing evacuations and road closures.

Jones Road Wildfire Blazes Across 20 Miles; Teen Accused of Starting It

Joseph Kling, 19, of Ocean Township has been charged with arson for allegedly starting the massive Jones Road Wildfire by leaving a bonfire unattended. The fire has burned over 20 square miles in Ocean County, making it the largest wildfire in New Jersey in two decades. Kling is being held without bail ahead of a detention hearing, and he also faces unrelated assault charges from earlier this year. Officials praised the quick response that helped limit the fire’s impact amid ongoing drought conditions.

No Tax Increase in Cape May’s $41.5M Budget; Public Hearing May 20

Good news is worth repeating. Cape May’s 2025 budget keeps the local purpose tax steady for the sixth year in a row. The $41.5 million total includes $28 million for general operations and $13.5 million from self-funded utilities. Strong local revenues, shared services, and strategic use of surplus funds help support city operations while keeping taxes flat. Several capital projects are planned for 2025, including the development of a new police station. The city continues to seek funding and grants for its two most ambitious infrastructure efforts—the desalination plant and the expansion of the city’s seawall. A public hearing on the proposed budget will take place during the City Council meeting on May 20 at 5 p.m. in City Hall.
