8,500-Acre Wildfire Approaches Shuttered Power Plant in New Jersey

A wildfire in Ocean County, called the Jones Road Forest Fire, has burned over 8,500 acres and threatened the decommissioned Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant. Though the plant no longer operates, it stores spent nuclear fuel in secure containers. A small fire ignited on the site but was quickly controlled. Thousands of residents have been displaced due to the fire’s rapid spread, with emergency crews working around the clock to contain the flames and protect critical infrastructure. Officials confirm the fuel storage remains safe, despite ongoing evacuations and road closures.
Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Go Cashless on May 10

Starting May 10, tolls on the Ocean City-Longport Bridge will go cashless, eliminating the use of Bridge Tickets. The Cape May County Bridge Commission will refund unused tickets at $1.20 each, with submissions due by June 30. Drivers with E-ZPass or Toll By Plate will continue through toll points without disruption. Drivers already using E-ZPass won’t notice any changes, as tolls will continue to be collected through the E-ZPass system or via Toll By Plate. Both systems allow vehicles to pass through the toll booths without stopping. For more information on the Bridge Ticket refund process, residents can call 609-465-7806 or email [email protected].
