Ocean City’s 2025 Budget Adds to Tax Burden as Utility Costs Climb

Ocean City’s proposed 2025 budget includes a 5.5% increase in spending and a 7% rise in the local tax rate, following a similar hike last year. If approved, the average homeowner would pay an additional $242 in municipal taxes. The $124.6 million budget addresses rising costs in salaries, debt service, insurance, and utilities, including a 20% jump in electricity expenses. The city plans to use over $5 million in surplus funds to help balance the budget. Some residents expressed concern over the ongoing tax increases, particularly their effect on seniors. A final vote on the budget is scheduled for May 8.
Billions of Cicadas Expected as Brood 14 Emerges This Season

The tri-state area is preparing for a major cicada emergence this spring and summer, with Brood 14 expected to appear in 14 states. These insects, known for their loud buzzing, surface after spending years underground to mate and lay eggs. Cicadas possess a specialized organ called a tymbal that produces rapid clicking sounds. When repeated quickly, this creates the characteristic humming that defines summer evenings. Despite their noisy presence, cicadas are actually beneficial to the environment. Their burrowing helps aerate the soil, and they primarily feed on tree sap and leaves without causing long-term damage. If their feeding becomes excessive, using netting is a better solution than pesticides, which can harm other wildlife.
