BPU Postpones Decision on Atlantic City Electric’s Rate Hike Request

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has accepted a report detailing how to keep electricity affordable for low- and moderate-income residents during the state's shift to clean energy. The report calls for expanded assistance programs and proposes funding changes through a more progressive tax-based model. Senate Republicans oppose the recommendations, warning of increased costs for middle-class households. Meanwhile, the BPU delayed a decision on Atlantic City Electric's request for an additional 8% rate hike until August 21.
Five Mile Island Beach Project Faces Legal Storm in Cape May County
The $54 million “Five Mile Island” beach replenishment project in Cape May County is facing new legal and political challenges. Designed to combat erosion and prepare for future storms, the project is supported by North Wildwood and Lower Township but opposed by Wildwood and Wildwood Crest over concerns about shrinking beaches and economic impacts. Final plans show sand for the project would largely be sourced from Wildwood and Wildwood Crest. A judge recently restricted Wildwood Crest from withdrawing from the project, prompting legal action. The project’s timeline, originally set for 2026, is now in flux.
Wellness-Focused Café to Open in Wildwood Crest with Local Roots

Crest Coffee Company is set to open in early summer 2025 in Wildwood Crest, offering responsibly sourced coffee in a health-focused, modern setting. While many national chains have faced criticism for questionable ingredients and roasting processes, Crest Coffee is positioning itself as a year-round destination for high-quality coffee in a laid-back shore town setting. Founded by Maddie Hunt and her father Tom, the shop aims to provide a local alternative to big-name chains like Starbucks and Dunkin. Soon to be located at 104 East Cardinal Avenue, the new café will serve as a year-round destination for coffee lovers seeking cleaner, more sustainable options.
