March Presentation Highlights Cape May’s Only Revolutionary War Battle

The Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet, the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Cape May County, will be the focus of a free presentation in Wildwood Crest on March 25. The skirmish, which occurred in June 1776, involved the American ship Nancy, which ran aground to avoid British capture. With help from Continental Navy captain John Barry, the crew salvaged supplies and detonated the vessel, killing several British sailors. The event is part of efforts to highlight local Revolutionary War history as the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence approaches.

South Jersey’s Prehistoric Playground: Edelman Fossil Park & Museum Set to Open

The Edelman Fossil Park & Museum in Mantua, New Jersey, officially opens March 29, offering a unique mix of science exhibits and fossil digs in a former quarry dating back 66 million years. The $75 million attraction features a 30-foot mosasaur skeleton, interactive displays, and a dinosaur-themed playground. The site has yielded over 100,000 fossils and is expected to draw families, school groups, and researchers alike. General admission to the museum is $24 for children ages 3 to 12, and $29 for adults. The 75-minute Quarry Dig Experience costs an additional $25 with museum admission or $40 as a standalone activity.

At the Crossroads of Migration: Cape May Leads Worldwide Birding Collaboration

Cape May, one of the world's top birding destinations, is home to the Cape May Bird Observatory, which has tracked migration since 1976. The observatory is part of a global Friendship Agreement with similar institutions in the UK, Sweden, and Canada. Together, they share research, host a Young Professional Exchange, and use real-time tracking tools to monitor bird movements. Their work reflects a borderless approach to conservation and bird study, connecting people and wildlife across continents. To learn more about the Friendship Agreement or view live observations from the current Springwatch program (running March 1 to May 31), visitors can head to www.birdcapemay.org for updates and event listings.
