Cape May County Budget Lowers Tax Rate Again as Property Values Rise

The Cape May County budget for 2025 will lower the tax rate from 18.8 cents to 16.9 cents per $100 of assessed value, saving property owners $190 per $100,000. The budget includes major investments in infrastructure, with more than $100 million dedicated to bridge repairs, road paving, and a new court complex. The tax levy will be reduced by $671,000, marking the first decrease in over 30 years. An increase in the county’s ratable base to $97 billion is helping keep the tax rate down.

Upper Township Bartender Shakes Up the Industry with Bar Boss Win

Marisa Holt of Upper Township won the national Bar Boss competition in Nashville, earning a $20,000 prize and a magazine feature. Competing against top bartenders, she showcased her mixology skills with two unique cocktails, the Smoky Desert and the Sweet Dragon. Holt, who grew up in Ocean City and works in both New Jersey and New York, has built a career in bartending through flair performances and competitions. The contest raised over $580,000 for charity, and Holt’s victory is opening new career opportunities in the industry.

Repeat Offender Found Guilty of Neglecting 47 Animals in Cape May Home

Sandra Klochak, of Cape May County, was previously convicted of animal abuse in Pennsylvania, has again been found guilty of neglecting 47 animals and her elderly mother. Authorities discovered dogs and cats living in filth, while her bedridden mother was left without care in a hazardous environment. This case raises concerns about the effectiveness of prior penalties. The woman had previously been banned for two years from owning animals in Pennsylvania, yet she was able to repeat similar offenses in New Jersey. Animal welfare advocates are calling for a lifetime ban to prevent further abuse.
