Avalon’s Whitebrier Sold to Philadelphia’s Union League

The Philadelphia Union League has purchased the Whitebrier in Avalon, expanding its presence at the Jersey Shore. The Union League, founded in 1862 to support the Union during the Civil War, now boasts over 4,000 members and continues to expand its footprint in premier locations. The acquisition, approved by the club’s board, includes both the restaurant and surrounding land. While the club has not clarified if the venue will remain public, the additional space will help accommodate its growing membership. The deal is expected to close in the coming months, with a summer opening planned.
Obscura Brewing Set for Soft Opening in Cape May Court House
Obscura Brewing Company is opening in Cape May County, taking over the former Bucket Brigade location in Cape May Court House. The brewery will host a soft opening on March 6, featuring discounted beer festival tickets, live music, and food trucks. Additional events, including a St. Paddy’s Party and a free brewery jitney, are planned for March. The rebranded brewery, led by Karlson Hughes, will offer a 15-tap lineup with a mix of bold new flavors and familiar favorites.
Route 55 Will Not Extend to Cape May County, Officials Say

New Jersey’s transportation commissioner confirmed that Route 55 will not be extended beyond Port Elizabeth due to high costs and environmental concerns. The highway, which serves as a key route for travelers heading to Cape May County, has been the subject of debate for decades. The last major push for an extension came in 2000, when a New Jersey Senate resolution urged the state Department of Transportation to complete the project. However, environmental concerns—including the destruction of wetlands and sections of Belleplain State Forest—halted any further progress. With previous feasibility studies and legislative efforts failing to move the project forward, local officials now look for alternative solutions to ease summer traffic congestion.
