Trained Raptors Will Keep Ocean City Seagulls at Bay Again This Summer

Ocean City’s seagull-control program, which uses trained raptors to deter aggressive gulls from the Boardwalk, will continue this summer. The city will open the contract for competitive bidding, with proposals due March 20 and a decision expected by March 27. East Coast Falcons, the company managing the program since 2019, will need to compete to retain its role. While the program has been largely successful, some officials noted an increase in gull activity last summer, raising questions about the birds adapting. The program’s goal remains to push the gulls back to their natural habitats without harming them.

Cape May’s Historic Swain’s Hardware Stands the Test of Time

Swain’s Hardware has been a cornerstone of Cape May for over 120 years, surviving changes in retail while maintaining its commitment to community service. Established in 1896 by Charles and Margaret Swain, the store grew from a small home shop to a thriving hardware business. Generations of Swains have kept the family-run store alive, with each era adapting to new challenges. Today, under the leadership of fourth-generation owner Terri Swain, the store continues to serve Cape May’s residents and visitors. Beyond hardware, the Swain family has contributed significantly to local civic life and charitable work, ensuring their legacy extends far beyond their storefront.

Lawmakers Debate Murphy’s $1.1 Billion Tax Hike Proposal

Governor Phil Murphy’s budget plan includes over $1 billion in new taxes. Among the largest revenue generators in the proposal are $322.6 million from internet gaming, $317 million from real estate sales over $1 million, and $277 million from participatory sports. The plan also calls for a significant jump in the marijuana tax from $2.50 to $15 per ounce and a 10% increase in alcohol taxes. Additional taxes would be imposed on cigarettes, firearm fees, and marijuana. The plan does offer one tax cut, exempting baby products from sales tax. The budget proposal now moves to the state Legislature, where it is expected to face intense debate over tax policy and its impact on affordability in New Jersey.
