Renovation Reveals 134-Year-Old Message in Cape May's Allen AME Church Rafters

A handwritten note dating back to 1891 was discovered by contractors renovating Cape May’s historic Allen AME Church. Authored by Reverend Dr. Alexander Newton, the note detailed plastering work done at the church. Rev. Newton, a notable minister and abolitionist who served at the church, documented renovations occurring on June 19—now recognized as Juneteenth. Severely damaged in a 2018 fire, the church was purchased by the city in 2021 and is being restored to host cultural and community programming by East Lynne Theater Company.
New Jersey Sees Record Surge in Gun Permit Applications After Supreme Court Decision

Handgun carry permit applications in New Jersey have reached record highs following the 2022 Supreme Court Bruen decision, which restricted the state’s ability to deny such permits. January saw the highest monthly application number on record, surpassing previous peaks significantly. While officials initially expected even greater numbers, the growth is still dramatic compared to pre-Bruen levels. County data indicates a higher proportion of permits in Republican areas compared to Democratic urban areas. Despite concerns voiced by state authorities regarding increased firearm access, New Jersey gun violence rates have recently declined to historically low levels. State officials caution that the full consequences of expanded gun access may not be immediately evident, emphasizing continued focus on safety and misuse prevention.
Egg Harbor Crash: Woman Faces Manslaughter, Child Endangerment Charges After DUI Incident

An Egg Harbor Township woman, Oriel Dixon, has been arrested and charged following a fatal crash that occurred on December 16. Dixon allegedly drove under the influence, crossed into the opposite lane on Blackman Road, and collided with a vehicle driven by Joseph Natale, who later died from his injuries. Natale’s son, Tobias, suffered serious injuries requiring surgery. Dixon also faces child endangerment charges due to a minor in her vehicle at the time of the crash. Ironically, Dixon herself had been seriously injured in an earlier accident involving an intoxicated driver in December 2023.
