New Jersey Electricity Bills to Jump 20% This Summer

New Jersey electricity rates will rise between 17% and 20% starting June 1, 2025, due to increased demand and regional grid issues. Officials blame PJM Interconnection’s market failures, with the average bill expected to increase by over $40 per month. As reported here, a price cap agreement is expected to provide some relief, potentially saving consumers across the region $21 billion over two years. However, increases can be expected with estimated price hikes for Atlantic City Electric is about %17. The state government is advocating for reforms, but no immediate solutions have been implemented. For residents struggling with utility costs, assistance programs such as the Universal Service Fund, Fresh Start Program, and Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program are available through the NJBPU website.
Cape May Screening to Highlight African-American Civil War Soldiers’ Legacy

The documentary “Whispers from the Forgotten in Lower Township, New Jersey” explores the history of Union Bethel Civil War Veterans Cemetery, a historic African-American burial site in Erma. Directed by Tim Millaway, the film highlights the stories of 16 Civil War veterans buried there and the cemetery’s ties to the Underground Railroad. The 33-minute film will debut in New Jersey on February 15 at the Cape May County Library, featuring a panel discussion with descendants of those buried there. The cemetery, founded in 1831, served a community of freed African Americans and has been under the care of the Lower Township Historic Preservation Commission since 2018. The documentary aims to preserve and share the legacy of those interred, ensuring their contributions to history are remembered.

Authorities were on the scene for several hours, reopening nearby streets early Thursday.
