Jersey Shore Towns Earn Over $52M from Beach Badges in 2024

Jersey Shore towns collected over $52 million in beach badge sales for the 2024 season, with Ocean City ($6.2M), Belmar ($4.9M) and Cape May ($3.7M) leading in revenue. Rising operational costs have driven badge price increases, with daily rates averaging $10.50 in 2024, up from $8 in 2018. By law, towns cannot profit from badge sales, meaning funds go toward beach maintenance and services. Some locations, like Atlantic City and the Wildwoods, remain free to access. Ocean City’s Monty Crowned Best in Show at Westminster 2025

Monty, a giant schnauzer from Ocean City, made history by winning Best in Show at the 2025 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. He is the first giant schnauzer to ever win and the first working group winner since 2004. Co-owned and handled by Katie Bernardin, Monty had previously won the working group in 2023 and 2024. Bourbon, a whippet from Georgia, took Reserve Best in Show, while Archer, a Skye terrier from Flemington, also reached the final round. The event marked Westminster’s return to Madison Square Garden after five years.
Flu Cases Surge to 24 Million Nationwide, Hospitalizations Up 25%

Flu cases have surged nationwide this season, with over 24 million reported infections—a 10% increase from last year—according to the CDC. Hospital visits for flu-related illnesses have risen by 25%, resulting in 310,000 hospitalizations and 13,000 deaths, including 55 children. The most affected groups are adults over 65 and children under 5. Influenza A (H1N1) remains the dominant strain, comprising over 70% of cases. While flu cases are climbing, COVID-19 hospitalizations are declining, though experts warn of a possible resurgence due to new variants. RSV activity is also decreasing, though pediatric hospitalizations for the virus remain high in some areas. Health officials continue to stress the importance of vaccinations, early testing, and preventative measures like handwashing, masking in crowded spaces, and staying home when sick.
