South Jersey Electricity Customers to Avoid Billions in Rate Hikes Under New Agreement

The agreement, supported by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, lowers price caps on upcoming capacity auctions, preventing drastic cost increases. The move follows concerns over a sharp rise in electricity rates after PJM’s July 2024 auction, which triggered public and political backlash. As part of the deal, PJM will also speed up approvals for new energy connections to stabilize supply. While officials welcome the agreement, they stress the need for further action to ensure long-term affordability.
