Critics Say New NJ Ballot Law Gives Incumbents an Unfair Advantage

Gov. Phil Murphy signed a law on February 3 that more than doubles petition signature requirements for candidates. The bill raises signature requirements for Assembly candidates from 100 to 250 and increases thresholds for other offices as well. The law takes effect immediately, affecting candidates collecting signatures for the June 10 primary. Critics argue the change favors incumbents and limits competition in a year when all 80 Assembly seats are up for election. Democratic 1st District Assembly candidates Brandon Saffold and Carolyn Rush oppose the change, linking it to the court ruling that abolished the county line ballot system. The bill passed quickly, with some legislators voting against it or abstaining.

Emergency Rescue: Coast Guard Saves Duck Hunters in Late-Night Mission

The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Atlantic City rescued three stranded duck hunters on January 30. The hunters had been stuck for nearly 12 hours before being hoisted to safety by an MH-65E helicopter. After the rescue, they were evaluated for injuries and hypothermia at the Coast Guard station. The Atlantic City Air Station, operational since 1998, serves as the Coast Guard’s largest single airframe unit. The station covers a vast coastal region, providing essential search and rescue operations from Connecticut to Virginia.

Think Before You Toss: These Items Are Illegal to Trash in New Jersey

Improperly disposing of certain items in New Jersey can lead to environmental damage and fines. Hazardous materials, such as chemicals found in household items, should be taken to designated drop-off locations. Additionally, certain materials, including ceramic cups and plates, clay flower pots, drinking glasses, light bulbs, mirror and window glass, plastic wrap, packing peanuts and bubble wrap, wax boxes, used metal cookware, stainless-steel bottles, old paint cans, or metal car parts, should not be placed in recycling bins. Large items like furniture and appliances must be scheduled for bulk pick-up or taken to donation centers. Understanding and following local waste disposal rules helps protect the environment and avoids costly fines.
