Adm. Linda Fagan Dismissed Amid Border Security and Leadership Criticisms

Adm. Linda Fagan, the first woman to lead the U.S. Coast Guard and a military branch, was dismissed on Jan. 20, President Trump’s first day in office, over concerns about border security, fentanyl trafficking, and a perceived overemphasis on diversity initiatives. Fagan, who made history as the Coast Guard's first female admiral, faced criticism for declining enlistment rates and a culture of misconduct during her tenure at the Coast Guard Academy. Adm. Kevin E. Lunday has replaced her as acting commandant. The impact of this leadership change on Coast Guard operations, including the Cape May training facility, remains to be seen.

Wildwood Police Use New Technology to Solve Boardwalk Graffiti Case

The Wildwood Police Department used new surveillance technology to identify a juvenile suspect in a January 10 graffiti incident on the boardwalk near Juniper Avenue. The suspect turned himself in three days later and will complete a diversion program and pay restitution for cleanup costs. Police are addressing similar offenses seriously to improve community safety and property values, urging residents to share information about such incidents.

Ocean City and Cape May Face Tourism Challenges as Hotel Numbers Plummet

Eustice Mita, CEO of ICONA Resorts, has called for increased hotel development in Cape May County to combat a dramatic decline in accommodations over the last 30 years. Speaking at a local business luncheon, he outlined plans for two major projects: a new resort on Ocean City’s Boardwalk at the former Wonderland Pier site and an expanded motel in Wildwood Crest. Mita emphasized the economic importance of hotels to the region’s tourism industry and expressed concern about short-term rentals replacing traditional accommodations. Despite strong personal ties to the area, his projects have faced opposition from residents and officials. Local leaders at the event acknowledged the challenges of developing hotels but expressed support for initiatives that could boost the county’s tourism economy.

Local teen, Hayden Schofield, a 17-year-old described as kind, outgoing, and passionate about biking, died in a dirt bike accident on January 14. Friends and family have created a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses. Please consider visiting the page to help alleviate Hayden’s family's financial burden. The link to the page can be found here and will remain available on this page until the scheduled service on January 25th.
