Cape May County to Elevate Over 1,400 Buildings Under New Flood Plan

The Army Corps of Engineers has unveiled an $8 billion plan to protect New Jersey’s back bay areas from storms and rising sea levels. The revised proposal focuses on elevating buildings, flood-proofing critical facilities, and restoring wetlands while excluding costly floodgates and levees from the 2021 version. Nearly a quarter of the structures designated for elevation are in Cape May County, excluding Ocean City. Public input is welcome through February 18, with a virtual meeting scheduled for January 22.

Cape May and Sussex Counties Among Targets in NJ Tree Pest Battle

New Jersey plans to treat 13,712 acres across five counties including Cape May County in 2025 to combat Lymantria dispar dispar (formerly known as the gypsy moth), a tree-killing pest spreading throughout the state. The recommendation marks a significant increase from 2024 due to rising infestations caused by reduced treatment in neighboring states and weather conditions affecting natural pest control. Sussex County accounts for over half of the recommended treatment acreage, with efforts set to begin in May using a biological insecticide.
