Rep. Van Drew Demands Answers on Rising Electricity Costs in South Jersey

On January 8, Rep. Jeff Van Drew sent a letter to Pepco CEO J. Tyler Anthony requesting updates on efforts to manage electricity costs, including the status of a promised audit of ACE’s billing system, while also questioning a pending rate increase request. While ACE cites infrastructure improvements as the reason for its proposed rate increase, Van Drew has raised concerns about the burden on local residents. Electricity bills are influenced by supply costs, distribution fees, and state-mandated charges, with ACE responsible for delivering power but not generating it. The BPU is expected to decide on the rate increase in April.

Swift Response Saves Kayaker Stranded on Sandbar in Corson’s Inlet

Ocean City police and fire crews rescued a kayaker stranded on a sandbar in Corson’s Inlet on Saturday morning. According to the Ocean City Firefighters Association, rescue teams quickly launched a watercraft to assist the individual. Once brought back to shore, the kayaker was evaluated by ambulance personnel and was found to be uninjured. No injuries were reported, and authorities have not disclosed the kayaker’s identity.

Wildwood Towns Clash Over Federal Sand Redistribution Project

Wildwood and Wildwood Crest are resisting a long-planned federal beach replenishment project intended to redistribute sand to erosion-prone North Wildwood. The project, which promises a 50-year federal commitment, aims to stabilize beaches across Five Mile Island. While North Wildwood supports the plan, Wildwood officials worry that shrinking their wide beaches could harm tourism and local events. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and state DEP plan further discussions, with construction slated for 2026. Local officials warn that rejecting the project could have long-term economic and environmental consequences
