New Jersey’s Forgotten Aviation Pioneer: Solomon Andrews and the Aereon Airships

With the recent sightings of mysterious lights in the skies, we recall a New Jersey pioneer of aviation who has nothing to do with drones. Solomon Andrews, a 19th-century physician from Perth Amboy, revolutionized aviation with the invention of the Aereon airships. Andrews piloted the original Aereon in 1863, a craft consisting of three elongated hydrogen balloons connected to a basket. Despite its seemingly unwieldy appearance, the Aereon was a marvel of ingenuity, using adjustable weights and a rudder for steering. Unlike traditional balloons, Andrews' invention allowed controlled flight, enabling the ship to circle, glide, and even move against the wind. Despite these successes, Andrews' vision for regular airship transportation between New York and Philadelphia never materialized. Economic difficulties after the Civil War, compounded by a bank failure, forced his Aerial Navigation Company into bankruptcy. The Aereons never achieved commercial success, but their technological innovations left a lasting legacy.

Witness Tampering Charge Filed Against Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small faces a new charge of witness tampering for allegedly asking his daughter to change her story about a head injury linked to abuse claims. This charge adds to prior allegations of child endangerment and assault against both Small and his wife, Dr. La’Quetta Small. The investigation began after the teen reported abuse to school staff, which led to delayed reporting and charges against two school employees. The Smalls were first charged in April following a search of their home, during which investigators seized electronics. Mayor Small has publicly denied the accusations, labeling the charges as unfounded and vowing to fight the case.
