Ocean City Scraps Occupancy Tax After Pushback from Hospitality Industry
Ocean City has decided against implementing a 3 percent local occupancy tax on hotels, motels, and rentals booked via services like Airbnb. The state of New Jersey already imposes a 5 percent occupancy tax and a 6.625 percent sales tax on lodging, and the proposed 3 percent tax would have added another layer of expense for visitors. City Council withdrew the proposal after strong opposition from the hospitality industry, citing concerns that the tax would deter visitors and harm local businesses. The Council has no immediate plans to revisit the idea, focusing instead on keeping the city affordable for vacationers.
New Jersey Faces Laser Safety Crisis Amid Public Frenzy Over Drone Sightings
Reports of lasers aimed at aircraft in New Jersey have risen sharply, with 59 incidents in December compared to eight last year. The surge in laser incidents coincides with heightened public concern over drone sightings in the region. Federal agencies, including the FAA, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security, have been monitoring the situation closely. While most drone sightings are attributed to aircraft, stars, or hobbyist drones, officials have reiterated that they do not pose a national security threat. Federal agencies are investigating drone sightings, most of which are attributed to aircraft or hobbyist drones. The FBI in New Jersey has urged residents not to take matters into their own hands by shooting at suspected drones or pointing lasers at them, warning of potentially dangerous consequences if manned aircraft are mistakenly targeted.
