Victory for Cape May: Offshore Wind Projects Officially Scrapped
Cape May County has ended legal disputes with Orsted over its canceled Ocean Wind One and Two offshore wind projects. Orsted abandoned the projects after state and federal authorities revoked key approvals, and the company agreed to dismiss legal challenges. Local officials and activists claim the decision preserves tourism, fisheries, and marine ecosystems. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has suspended the lease areas, and Orsted has no plans to use them or proceed with similar projects nearby.
Upper Township Honors Local Heroes at Public Safety Awards
Upper Township held its first Public Safety Awards, honoring volunteers and professionals for their life-saving work during emergencies, including a burning school bus, a swimmer rescue, and a highway birth. The ceremony recognized dozens of individuals whose teamwork, training, and quick thinking have saved lives and prevented tragedies in the community. Officials praised these heroes, noting that their success stems from years of preparation and unwavering dedication. “This doesn’t happen by accident,” said Mayor Jay Newman. “It takes years of training, proper procedures, and dedicated people to make it happen.”
Drought Worsens in New Jersey as Reservoirs Lag Seasonal Averages
New Jersey remains in a severe drought despite minor improvements in reservoir levels after recent rainfall. Many of New Jersey’s reservoirs are averaging 54% capacity, well below the seasonal average of 75%. Recent rainfall brought minimal relief. While the New Jersey Forest Fire Service currently reports a low fire risk, the U.S. Drought Monitor continues to classify North Jersey as experiencing severe drought (D2) and South Jersey as facing extreme drought (D3). Residents are encouraged to continue water conservation efforts as the region waits for more substantial precipitation to alleviate the ongoing drought.
