Cape May Monarch Monitoring Project Sees Record Insect Migration Data
The Monarch Monitoring Project (MMP) in Cape May Point, now in its 34th year, documented a later-than-usual monarch migration, influenced by climate change and weather conditions. A switch from road censuses to stationary point counts improved data accuracy and safety while expanding research to include other insect species. Peak migration occurred in early October, with 3,380 monarchs tagged for tracking. The season also saw increased roosting activity and significant dragonfly migrations. These findings underscore the value of the MMP in understanding and conserving migratory insects.
