Small Whale Washes Ashore on Cape May’s Scenic Sunset Beach

A small whale was found washed ashore at Cape May County’s Sunset Beach on Tuesday afternoon, prompting an investigation by the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. While details about the whale remain unknown, officials responded quickly to the scene at the popular tourist destination, which is also home to the historic SS Atlantus concrete ship. The cause of the stranding has yet to be determined.

New Law Eases Costs of Beach Repairs for Avalon and Stone Harbor

Jersey Shore towns can now use sand from Hereford Inlet for federally funded beach replenishment projects, thanks to revisions in the Coastal Barrier Resources Act signed by President Biden. The change eliminates restrictions that forced towns like Avalon and Stone Harbor to rely on municipal funds for storm-related sand loss. The BEACH Act, a bipartisan effort, marks a significant victory for coastal resiliency and community collaboration.

Cold Case Cracked: Canadian Extradited in 1997 Bridgewater Murder

Nearly 27 years after the murder of Tammy Tignor in Bridgewater, NJ, advancements in DNA technology have led to the arrest and extradition of a suspect, Robert Creter, from Canada. The case, cold for decades, was reopened in 2023 with updated DNA testing, resulting in a match through the CODIS database. Creter was taken into custody in June 2024 and extradited to New Jersey in November. This development offers hope for resolving other cold cases in the region, as authorities continue leveraging modern forensic tools.
