Cape May County Commissioners Reject Transparency Proposals
The Cape May County Board of County Commissioners dismissed proposals by Commissioner Will Morey to improve government transparency. Suggestions included making meeting audio recordings available within 24 hours and moving meeting times to 7 p.m. to increase accessibility. Despite a transparency report ranking the county among the lowest in South Jersey, the board maintained that their current practices are adequate, with commissioners emphasizing the openness of public meetings. Morey argued the county lags behind its peers, but no action was taken on his proposals.
Residents Push Back Against Wonderland Pier Redevelopment
A standing-room-only audience at a Nov. 25 meeting expressed skepticism over a proposed 252-room hotel on Ocean City’s Wonderland Pier site. Developer Eustace Mita outlined his plan, citing the need for more hotel rooms and likening the project to the historic Flanders Hotel. Critics argued that a redevelopment zone designation would bypass existing zoning rules and feared overdevelopment could harm the boardwalk’s character. Mita defended the project, emphasizing that the city has not seen a new hotel in 50 years and stating that zoning regulations established over a century ago may no longer serve the city’s current needs. While no agreements were reached, a follow-up meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Tabernacle Baptist Church to continue the discussion.
