Snow Stats Show February as NJ’s Peak Month for Winter Weather

A 50-year analysis of snowfall data from the Applied Climate Information System identifies February 5th as New Jersey's snowiest day, with a high likelihood of snowfall in early-to-mid February. The snow season typically spans from late November to early March, with notable peaks in December, January, and February. While snow is rare before December (Interestingly, Christmas Eve sees very little snowfall historically, while Christmas Day has had snowfall in 11 of the last 50 years.) or after March, occasional surprises occur in the fall or spring. While this data analysis doesn’t predict the exact snowfall for upcoming winters, it offers a snapshot of when residents can typically expect significant snow activity. As winter draws nearer, it’s a reminder to be prepared for the icy conditions ahead.

New Jersey Quake's Unusual Effects Reveal Hidden Fault Line

A newly identified fault line explains why April’s magnitude 4.8 earthquake in New Jersey caused its strongest shaking far from the epicenter. Researchers found that energy waves traveled downward and then reemerged northeast of the epicenter, affecting areas like Newark and New York City more than Tewksbury Township. The fault's unique geometry and the region’s ancient tectonic history contributed to the unusual patterns. Researchers warn that while a quake of this magnitude occurs roughly every 100 years in the region, the potential for stronger earthquakes—up to magnitude 7—exists, though these events are far rarer. Temporary seismometers have been deployed in the area to monitor aftershocks and improve fault mapping, which could help predict the impacts of future quakes.

The restructuring is designed to reduce debt and improve financial flexibility, with completion expected by early 2025.
