False Alarms: Upper Township's Mercury Scare Tied to Sample Tampering

Upper Township’s initial high mercury readings in private wells have been linked to possible sample tampering, according to the DEP. Follow-up tests revealed safe mercury levels, though other chemicals remain above acceptable limits. DEP Commissioner Shawn LaTourette expressed dismay at the alleged tampering, calling it a misuse of public resources and an act that stoked community fear. An ongoing investigation aims to determine who may have altered the samples. Residents are receiving state assistance with water alternatives as the DEP continues its investigation and final testing.

Ghostly Intrigue: The Paranormal Legacy of Saddle River's Oldest Home

Larry Blyden and Carol Haney, a Broadway couple, moved into the historic Achenbach House in Saddle River in 1960, where they encountered ghostly happenings. After parapsychologist Hans Holzer's investigation, the spirit was identified as John George Achenbach, the home’s original builder, who wished to remain its guardian. Despite the ghostly agreement that the spirit would stay peacefully, the couple's personal lives unraveled. They divorced soon after, and Haney tragically passed away in 1964 from complications related to diabetes. Blyden, who found success as a TV host, died in a car accident in 1975. The house changed hands several times and was owned by travel mogul Mario Perillo, though he never lived in it. A devastating fire in 2004 nearly destroyed the house, leaving only its oldest stone-walled section intact.
