HGTV Crowns New Jersey’s Pine Barrens as the “Creepiest Place” in the State

HGTV has named New Jersey’s Pine Barrens as the state’s “creepiest” location, thanks to the legendary Jersey Devil and the mysterious atmosphere of the forested region. Spanning seven counties, the Pine Barrens is known for eerie sightings and a rich history in local folklore. The Pine Barrens have also become a part of pop culture, making appearances in TV shows like The Sopranos and Marvel’s Fantastic Four. The area’s eerie atmosphere and folklore have inspired books as well, including John McPhee’s The Pine Barrens, which delves into the region’s unique history and ecology.

New Jersey's Eeriest Ghost Town Isn’t a Town at All—It’s an Abandoned Jail

New Jersey has landed a spot on Country Living's list of the top 18 spookiest places in America, and it’s not the spot you’d expect. While many associate Cape May with ghostly tales and supernatural lore, this location is far from there—and far from any traditional ghost town.

The Essex County Jail Annex in North Caldwell, New Jersey, has been named one of the 18 spookiest places in America. Built in 1873, this Victorian-style prison was abandoned in the late 1990s after years of overcrowding and poor conditions. Despite not being a town, its decaying buildings and eerie atmosphere earn it a place as one of the state's top ghostly locations.

What Victorian-era Cape May mansion, now a museum, is one of the best-preserved examples of "Stick Style" architecture in the area?
