Discover Battery 223: Cape May's Abandoned WWII Bunker at State Park
Battery 223, an abandoned WWII bunker at Cape May Point State Park, is a must-see for history buffs and explorers. Built in the 1940s to protect the coastline, this imposing structure now sits much closer to the shoreline due to erosion. Visitors can explore the exterior and learn about its past use in harbor defense, though the interior is sealed off. Once equipped with six-inch guns, Battery 223 was decommissioned in 1944 and became part of the park in 1962. It’s accessible by parking near the Cape May Lighthouse and walking a short distance toward the ocean. The structure has largely been reclaimed by nature, with greenery sprouting atop its once-hidden roof, making it an even more alluring sight.
Mercury Contamination Discovered in Private Wells in Upper Township
The New Jersey DEP is investigating mercury contamination in private wells in Upper Township’s Beesley’s Point area. Around a dozen wells have been found to contain mercury, prompting ongoing testing and the installation of filtration systems in affected homes. Local and state agencies are working together to ensure clean drinking water and provide relocation assistance where necessary. The source of the contamination is still under investigation.
Turkey Prices Drop for 2024, But Some Thanksgiving Items See a Price Hike
As Thanksgiving approaches, food costs are expected to see some major fluctuations, offering both savings and increased expenses depending on what you buy. While many may assume that prices are rising across the board, the reality is more nuanced, with turkey and other traditional items seeing significant changes. Turkey prices have dropped by 16%, continuing a trend from last year. However, prices for items like ham and sweet potatoes are rising, while cranberry products show a mix of price changes. Overall, the cost of a Thanksgiving meal has been declining, with the 2023 average down 4.5% from 2022.
