Beach Replenishment in Cape May County Faces Hurdles as Property Owners Consider Easements

The DEP is seeking approval from more than 100 property owners in Cape May County for a $40 million beach replenishment project aimed at protecting the coastlines of North Wildwood, Wildwood, and nearby areas. The project has faced delays due to concerns over its impact, and the state is working to secure "perpetual easements" for long-term access. Final project plans are expected soon, with the possibility of property condemnations if agreements cannot be reached. The initiative, dubbed the Five Mile Island project, seeks to provide long-term coastal protection, but the approval process underscores the challenge of balancing the needs of property owners, local communities, and environmental resilience.

April 2025 Marks the End of Cash Toll Payments on Cape May Bridges

The Cape May County Bridge Commission will eliminate cash toll payments on April 1, 2025, transitioning to an all-electronic toll system. Drivers without E-Z Pass will receive toll invoices by mail, with a $50 fee for unpaid invoices. The Cape May County Bridge Commission oversees five toll bridges along Ocean Drive, including the Ocean City-Longport, Townsends Inlet, Corsons Inlet, Middle Thorofare, and Grassy Sound bridges. This shift to cashless payments aligns with a broader trend toward electronic tolling in the region. A buyback program will be offered for unused discount tickets.
