Comets Tsuchinshan-ATLAS and ATLAS Light Up the October Sky
October may bring a special treat for stargazers, with two newly discovered comets—C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) and C/2024 S1 (ATLAS)—visible in the night sky. For those eager to catch a glimpse, the next few weeks present a prime opportunity to observe these celestial phenomena, as both comets make their rare appearances. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will make its closest approach on October 12, while Comet ATLAS may become as bright as Venus by late October or early November. The best viewing times for Tsuchinshan-ATLAS are from October 14 to 24, looking west after sunset.
Spirit Christmas Launches in Mays Landing, Bringing Holiday Cheer to the Northeast
Spirit Halloween is launching a new seasonal venture, Spirit Christmas, with the flagship store opening in Mays Landing, New Jersey, on October 18. This new holiday-themed store will offer an immersive shopping experience, featuring a wide array of Christmas décor, apparel, inflatables, and gifts. Shoppers can enjoy unique attractions like a life-sized gingerbread village and have the chance to mail letters to Santa, determine whether they’ve been naughty or nice, and even pose for a digital postcard with Santa Claus. Spirit Christmas will open 10 pop-up stores in the Northeast this November and December.
Why the Atlantic Hurricanes Are Missing New Jersey This Year
New Jersey has escaped the effects of this year's Atlantic hurricane season due to strong high-pressure systems deflecting storms away from the region. These barriers have resulted in one of the driest Septembers on record, with the trend continuing into October. While Hurricane Milton and other tropical storms have impacted the southeastern U.S., steering winds and persistent high pressure have kept New Jersey dry. Looking ahead, forecasters see no significant storms on the horizon that would change the current dry spell. There is a slight chance—30% to 40%—of some rain Sunday night or Monday morning, as a cold front approaches from the west, but substantial rainfall remains unlikely in the near term.
Phillies Fall Short Against Mets as Missed Opportunities Lead to Early Exit
The Philadelphia Phillies face tough questions after another playoff disappointment, with a poor second-half performance and high chase rates pointing to underlying issues. The team had hoped to flip the switch in the postseason but fell short. These concerns now fall on Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies' president of baseball operations, who must find answers to avoid another disappointing season in 2025. Whether it’s refining the roster, addressing mental and physical fatigue, or instilling a stronger mindset, significant changes may be needed to ensure the team lives up to its potential next year.
