Cape May Tourism Generates $637M in Taxes, But Receives Little in Return

Cape May County generated $637.5 million in state and local taxes through tourism in 2023 but received only 6% of its occupancy tax back. Of the $22 million generated, only $1.3 million was granted back. Comparatively, counties like Essex and Salem received more than they contributed through tourism. Diane Wieland, the county’s tourism director, voiced concerns over this imbalance, particularly highlighting that Cape May supports other areas, such as the Newark Museum, while seeing limited returns. She questioned the allocation of funds, noting that the state keeps 75% of the occupancy tax revenue. Despite concerns over fund allocation, the county’s tourism industry remains strong, with $7.7 billion in visitor spending. Infrastructure improvements, including at Cape May Airport, aim to support future growth.

Lifetime Ban Agreed by Ex-Cape May Detective After Unauthorized Investigation

Former Cape May County detective Robert P. Harkins Jr. agreed to a lifetime public employment ban, resolving a case in which he was accused of improperly investigating a hit-and-run involving his mother-in-law. Harkins applied for pretrial intervention, and in exchange, prosecutors dropped the most severe charge against him. He admitted to bypassing office policies but did not plead guilty to any charges.

City Sets New Recycling Limits Amid Rising Costs and Collection Concerns

The city has implemented a new recycling limit, restricting property owners to two 96-gallon bins per week. Any additional recycling will require private collection, shifting the responsibility away from the city. City Manager Paul Dietrich explained that the new regulations aim to clarify the city’s responsibilities regarding recycling collection. The changes ensure that larger businesses or properties manage their own excess recycling, relieving some of the burden on city services.

Phillies Walk Off Mets, Even NLDS in Thrilling Game 2 Victory

The Phillies tied their NLDS series with the Mets after a thrilling 7-6 walk-off win in Game 2, capped by Nick Castellanos' ninth-inning heroics. The teams exchanged home runs and leads throughout, but Philadelphia’s late comeback sealed the victory. Game 3 will take place in New York on Tuesday.
