Earth to Temporarily Capture a "Second Moon" This Sunday
Earth is set to temporarily capture asteroid 2024 PT5 as a "second moon" on September 29. The asteroid, part of the Arjuna asteroid belt, will be in Earth's gravitational hold until November 25. While Earth's primary moon has orbited for over 4 billion years, 2024 PT5's visit will be short-lived. The asteroid will come into Earth's gravitational hold at 15:54 EDT (1954 UTC) and leave by 11:43 EDT (1543 UTC) on November 25, according to data from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The asteroid, from a group of near-Earth objects, will not complete a full orbit around the planet but will pass through Earth's neighborhood at a distance of about 2.8 million miles (4.5 million kilometers) before resuming its usual orbit around the sun.
U.S. Coast Guard Airlifts Stranded Man and Dog as Hurricane Helene Rages
Coast Guard rescues a man and his dog
In a daring rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater saved a man and his dog after their 36-foot sailboat became disabled and started taking on water about 25 miles off Sanibel Island on Thursday. The incident occurred as Hurricane Helene pummeled Florida with high winds and heavy rain, resulting in widespread flooding, power outages, and evacuations. Despite the challenging weather, the Coast Guard airlifted the man and his dog to safety, delivering them to Southwest Florida International Airport in stable condition.
Cape May Woman and Franklinville Man Face Charges for $10,000 Check Fraud Scheme
Alyssa Wright of Cape May and Bryce Sanders of Franklinville have been charged with forgery, theft, and receiving stolen property after attempting to cash fraudulent checks totaling over $10,000. The checks, falsely linked to the Greensburg Salem School District, were flagged by banks in Delaware. Investigations revealed that one check was deposited into Wright's account, while Sanders attempted to cash another. Both suspects are awaiting a preliminary hearing.
Phillies Fall 9-1 as Suarez Struggles in Final Regular-Season Start
The Phillies lost 9-1 to the Nationals, with Ranger Suarez struggling in his final regular-season start. Washington scored six runs in the first two innings, and the Phillies' offense was limited to one run. Suarez's inconsistency, following injury issues earlier in the season, raises concerns about his readiness for the playoffs. The Phillies are still in the hunt for home-field advantage against the Dodgers, with two games left in the regular season.
