Governor Murphy’s New Water Plan Targets Infrastructure, Climate Resilience
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has introduced a climate-focused water supply plan to modernize the state’s infrastructure and address the growing impacts of climate change. The 2024 plan highlights the need for proactive planning and stricter regulations to protect water resources, though the changes could lead to higher consumer water prices. Public feedback was instrumental in finalizing the plan, which responds to concerns about more frequent droughts, flooding, and aging infrastructure.
Montgomery’s Stefanie Lachenauer Wins 2024 State Teacher of the Year Award
Stefanie Lachenauer was surprised with the New Jersey 2024-2025 State Teacher of the Year award during an assembly at Montgomery Upper Middle School. A long-time educator known for her focus on both academics and emotional well-being, Lachenauer will now represent New Jersey in the National Teacher of the Year competition. The announcement coincided with the school being named a National Blue Ribbon School.
Recycling 101: Don’t Crush Aluminum Cans or Flatten Bottles
Crushing aluminum cans before recycling might seem helpful, but it can actually hinder the sorting process at recycling facilities. Modern machines have trouble detecting flattened cans, which can lead to them not being recycled. Similarly, there’s also confusion around flattening plastic bottles. While it was once recommended, advances in recycling technology now allow facilities to better process unflattened plastic bottles. Flattened bottles, much like crushed cans, can be misidentified as paper during sorting. The bottom line is that leaving cans and bottles in their original form makes the recycling process more efficient, ensuring more materials are properly sorted and processed.
Walker's Struggles Continue in Phillies' 10-4 Loss to Cubs
The Phillies fell to the Cubs 10-4 as Taijuan Walker struggled again, raising his ERA to 7.10 in what may be his final appearance this season. Walker allowed multiple runs in relief, casting doubt on his future with the team, despite being owed $36 million. The Phillies, who have already clinched their division, still aim to secure a first-round playoff bye with two games left to win, though manager Rob Thomson prioritizes player health over home-field advantage. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber each homered in the loss, while Austin Hays returned from injury.
