Beach Safety in Focus: Wildwood Crest’s Lifeguard Plan Through September

The Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol has scheduled its beach guard coverage for the remainder of the 2024 season. Lifeguard services will be available daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. up to Labor Day (today) and the subsequent weekend. Post-Labor Day, from September 3-6, limited staffing will result in only six beaches being guarded. Full lifeguard services will end on September 8, but emergency response teams will be on call the weekends of September 14-15 and 21-22. Additionally, transport services for the handicapped will continue through September 8. Beachgoers are advised to swim only at guarded beaches during operational hours.

Local Bars Compete in HEROtini Mocktail Challenge for Designated Drivers

The HEROtini Mocktail Challenge is sweeping local bars and casinos, promoting non-alcoholic beverages as part of the HERO Campaign, which encourages designated driving. Initiated by Bill Elliott and his wife, the challenge involves twenty-seven venues creating flavorful mocktails like the Strawberry Mokjito and Greg's Mango Lemonade. This initiative honors the memory of the Elliotts' son, John, who died due to a drunk driving incident, by fostering a culture of safety and responsible enjoyment. Participants and patrons are encouraged to vote for their favorite mocktails, contributing to the campaign's aim to prevent drunk driving tragedies. To vote for your favorite HEROtini and support the Hero Campaign, please visit their website.

NHL Star Johnny Gaudreau Killed in DUI Crash, New Jersey National Guardsman Charged

Sean Higgins, accused of fatally hitting NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew while drunk driving in New Jersey, remains jailed on vehicular homicide charges. Higgins, a New Jersey Army National Guard officer, wasn't on duty at the time. The crash occurred as the Gaudreau brothers were bicycling near their home. Higgins allegedly admitted to drinking before the accident and failed a sobriety test. He faces up to 10 years per charge if convicted. The incident has deeply affected both families and the community. The brothers had been home in New Jersey to appear as groomsmen in their sister’s wedding; it has since been canceled.

Castellanos Drives in All 3 Runs as Phillies Outlast Braves in 11th

Nick Castellanos led the Phillies to a 3-2 win over the Braves with a game-winning single in the 11th inning. He drove in all three of Philadelphia's runs, including a crucial two-run double in the sixth. The Phillies' bullpen pitched five scoreless innings to secure the victory, while Aaron Nola struck out nine over six innings. The Phillies extended their lead over the Braves in the NL East to seven games, while Atlanta clings to a narrow lead for the final NL wild-card spot.
