Shop Owners at Jersey Shore Report Exceptional Sales This Season
Despite numerous challenges this summer, Jersey Shore businesses have reported near record-high sales. According to local shop owners, favorable weather and a high volume of tourist traffic contributed to a successful season. The Belmar-Avon bridge, up north, as well as the Middle Thorofare Bridge connecting Wildwood and Cape May were potential disasters to commuters, but ended up being repaired sooner than expected. Hot weather drove large crowds to cooler beach areas. As the summer concludes, businesses hope for continued good weather to extend their success into the fall season.
New Jersey Faces Surge in Whooping Cough Cases as Schools Reopen
New Jersey health officials are warning of a surge in whooping cough cases as schools reopen. The respiratory illness, known for severe coughing spells, has seen a significant increase from previous years. Experts attribute the rise to reduced preventive measures like mask-wearing and social distancing. The state has recorded 128 cases this year, nearing pre-pandemic numbers. Health authorities stress the importance of vaccination, particularly for pregnant women and those in close contact with infants, to prevent the spread of this contagious disease. The CDC recommends the following schedule for the TDaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis) vaccination that helps protect people from whooping cough: A TDaP booster is recommended for pregnant women early in their third trimester and during each pregnancy to protect their newborns. Young children need five TDaP doses by kindergarten: at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 15 to 18 months, and 4 to 6 years. After that, the first TDaP booster is due at age 11. All students entering seventh grade are required to have proof of a whooping cough booster immunization. One dose of TDaP is recommended for adults 19 years of age and older who did not get TDaP as a teenager. After that, getting TDaP instead of the standard tetanus shot every 10 years will also reduce infections.
Fishing Boat Pinned Against Middle Thorofare Bridge After Power Failure
Friday, August 30th, the 90-foot fishing vessel F/V Jersey Cape experienced a power failure and drifted into the Middle Thorofare Bridge in Cape May County due to strong winds and outgoing tide. The bridge, already closed for maintenance, avoided further chaos. Cape May Sea Tow swiftly responded, successfully towing the vessel away, preventing significant damage and ensuring the safety of all crew members. The bridge is scheduled to reopen after a safety inspection.
Stellar Defense and Strong Pitching Lead Phillies to Shutout Win Over Braves
Zack Wheeler celebrated his 100th career victory with a stellar seven-inning shutout, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-0 win over the Atlanta Braves. Edmundo Sosa and Trea Turner contributed home runs to the victory. Michael Harris II of the Braves made a remarkable catch, but it wasn't enough to shift the momentum. The Phillies' bullpen preserved the lead, culminating in Carlos Estévez sealing the win with his 23rd save of the season. The victory extended the Phillies' lead over the Braves in the NL East to six games
