CSM Students Join Conservation Efforts, Tag Horseshoe Crabs in Cape May

College of Southern Maryland (CSM) students participated in a travel study program to Cape May, New Jersey, to help tag horseshoe crabs as part of a conservation effort. This activity, supported by the National Science Foundation, allowed students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world environmental protection. They worked alongside the American Littoral Society to collect data that aids in preserving the crabs' spawning habitats and supporting local ecosystems. This trip is part of CSM's initiative to provide hands-on learning experiences and is one of the first travel studies reintroduced after being halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Record Set: BetMGM Casino Pays Out $6.45 Million Jackpot

A player won a record $6,450,023 jackpot at BetMGM Casino playing online slots last Wednesday. The winner won when placing a $200 bet while playing the game Fruit Blaster, which bases wins on matching symbols like oranges, cherries, lemons, and plums. This win marks a historic event in iGaming, highlighted by BetMGM's CEO Adam Greenblatt. The jackpot, part of BetMGM's "The Big One" pool, had been growing since February when it reached $4 million. This payout is accessible to players on multiple platforms, including BetMGM, Borgata, Wheel of Fortune Casino, and Party Casino.

Man Injured by Possible Shark Bite at New Jersey Beach

A man was injured on Surrey Avenue Beach in Ventnor, South Jersey, after a potential shark bite around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Although the details are still under verification and no shark was seen, the man was hospitalized and is expected to recover. Following the incident, beach access restrictions have been implemented. Beachgoers are now only allowed into the water up to their knees until local leaders say otherwise.

Phillies Dominate the Kansas City Royals 11-3

The Philadelphia Phillies wrapped up their road trip with a resounding 11-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals, marking their third series win since the All-Star break. The game featured significant offensive performances, notably from Garrett Stubbs and the Phillies lineup who had dramatically improved their batting from the previous series against the Braves. Starting pitcher Kolby Allard also contributed with five solid innings. This win, combined with a Braves loss, extended their lead in the NL East to six games as they head into a crucial homestand.

Dramatic Finish to Little League World Series

Lake Mary, Florida, clinched their first Little League World Series title with a dramatic 2-1 walk-off win against Chinese Taipei in extra innings. Overcoming their historical 0-8 record in LLWS title games, Lake Mary survived four elimination rounds to face Taoyuan, Taiwan, which had been unbeaten in the tournament. The win was sealed by a misfielded bunt by Hunter Alexander in the eighth inning, allowing Lathan Norton to score the winning run. This display of resilience and sportsmanship marked a memorable victory for the Southeast Region champions.
