Middle Thorofare Bridge reopens sooner than expected

The Middle Thorofare Bridge, which had been stuck in the raised position due to a motor failure, unexpectedly reopened early Wednesday at 2 a.m. Cape May County officials initially warned that repairs could take weeks. The bridge, linking Lower Township's Diamond Beach and Wildwood Crest with Cape May, was fixed rapidly—just three days after the malfunction. This swift resolution came after the bridge commission secured a replacement motor and staff worked continuously to ensure its timely repair, resulting in the bridge being declared fully operational by engineers.

Jersey Shore's Coastal Erosion Intensified by Super Blue Moon and Storm Ernesto

Recent high tides have caused coastal erosion along the Jersey Shore, prompting the closure of the access road to Stone Harbor Point. Julia DiGeronimo, a shorebird steward, noted that the landscape has significantly changed due to the extreme tides influenced by storm Ernesto and the super blue moon. In North Wildwood, Mayor Patrick Rosenello highlighted the success of a beach replenishment project that protected the city from potential flooding. Stone Harbor officials plan to repair the damaged access road later in the week.

Roy Gillian, Former Ocean City Mayor and Amusement Park Pioneer, Passes Away at 94

Roy Gillian, the former mayor of Ocean City, New Jersey and founder of Gillian's Wonderland Pier, has passed away at the age of 94. His career included taking over the Fun Deck amusement park in 1957 with his brother Bob, which his father had established in 1930, and later opening Wonderland Pier in 1965. His contributions extended beyond amusement parks into local politics, where he served as an Ocean City commissioner and later as mayor from 1986 to 1990. Additionally, he was involved with the Shore Medical Center, the Jersey Cape Diagnostic and Training Center, and the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

His death comes shortly after his son Jay announced the closure of Gillian's Wonderland Pier, marking the end of an era for the iconic amusement park. Jay, also a mayor of Ocean City, expressed in a letter that despite his efforts to sustain the park through various challenges, it was no longer a viable business. The future of the property remains uncertain.

Phillies Extend NL East Lead Amid Heated Harper-Arcia Showdown

The Phillies-Braves rivalry heated up again after a dramatic encounter between Bryce Harper and Orlando Arcia. Following Harper's baserunning mistake in Game 2 of the 2023 NLDS, Arcia mocked Harper in the Braves' clubhouse, which spurred Harper to famously stare down Arcia after his two home runs in Game 3. This rivalry was reignited during Philadelphia's recent 3-2 victory at Truist Park, where Arcia and Harper exchanged glares following Arcia's home run. The Phillies, however, rallied late in the game to secure a win, extending their NL East lead to seven games with 36 games remaining.
