Cape May Breweries Win Big at National Beer Contest

At the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Championship, two breweries from New Jersey earned recognition among over 9,000 entries representing more than 170 beer styles. Bucket Brigade Brewery, located in Cape May Court House, clinched a gold medal for its specialty pale ale "Sum Puddin'," a silver for its non-alcoholic "Big Wave" adult root beer, and a bronze for its "Wipe Out" imperial stout. Meanwhile, Cape May Brewing Co. in Cape May secured a bronze medal for its Imperial India pale ale "Hazy Dawn." This beer competition is unique as it allows winners from the National Homebrew Competition to participate and judges a broad range of beer styles.

End of an Era: Historic Abbott Dairies Building Demolished in Wildwood

The historic Lehigh Valley Dairy Farms building in Wildwood, previously known as Abbott Dairies, is being demolished. The site at 3900 New Jersey Avenue saw the arrival of demolition equipment yesterday, signaling new developments for the area. Owned by Island Acquisitions, LLC, the property will be transformed into an 18-unit townhouse-style multifamily development with amenities such as pools and patios, following plans approved on May 6, 2024. This marks a significant change for a site rich in local history, dating back to its original opening in 1902. The demolition is a poignant moment for those with memories of the building, as it ushers in a new chapter for this part of Wildwood.

Intense Solar Activity Brings Aurora Borealis Sightings to New Jersey

The Jersey Shore recently experienced the awe-inspiring sight of the Northern Lights, marking the second time this year that this phenomenon has been visible in the area. The first occurrence was on May 10-11, and both times, the auroras presented a mesmerizing display of greens, pinks, and purples. This rarity is attributed to geomagnetic storms, caused by solar wind—charged particles from the sun—interacting with Earth’s magnetic field. Such interactions are more intense during periods of high solar activity, which is currently the case as we are approximately four years into the 11-year Solar Cycle 25. The Northern Lights are more likely to be seen further from the poles during severe geomagnetic storms, classified as G4 or G5, which occur infrequently but can potentially disrupt power grids and satellites. The recent visibility in New Jersey and other parts of the U.S. was facilitated by a G4 storm, and with ongoing solar activity, more opportunities to witness this natural spectacle are expected in the coming years.

Phillies' Zack Wheeler Misses Milestone Win in Loss

Marcell Ozuna's home run and Reynaldo López's strong pitching performance led the Atlanta Braves to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Ozuna hit his 37th homer of the season, helping the Braves close the gap within six games of the NL East-leading Phillies. López, returning from the injured list, struck out 10 in his first start since late July. The game marked a critical point in a three-game series, giving the injury-plagued Braves a chance to compete for the division title despite being relegated to the last wild-card spot due to numerous injuries, including a season-ending injury to Austin Riley.
