High Waves and Rip Currents Lead to Numerous Rescues on Jersey Shore
Authorities along the Jersey Shore issued a warning to beachgoers over the weekend after more than a dozen people were rescued from rough waters. In Ocean City, beaches were closed on Sunday due to storms with lightning and thunder. Beach Patrols reported significant swells caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto, leading to at least five major water rescues. Waves were initially three to four feet high but increased in intensity throughout the day, according to Beach Patrol Lt. Frank Christy. He emphasized the danger of rip currents and advised swimmers to stay near lifeguard stations and swim parallel to the shore if caught in a rip current. Similarly, in Ventnor City, rough waves reaching up to six feet prompted lifeguards to execute 17 rescues on the same day. A rip current warning for the Jersey Shore remains in effect until Tuesday.
New Jersey Initiates Statewide Drunk Driving Crackdown with Over $500K in Grants
New Jersey has launched a two-week crackdown on drunk and impaired driving across more than 100 towns, funded by state grants totaling $540,680. The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, running through Labor Day, involves 110 law enforcement agencies conducting enhanced patrols and setting up high-visibility sobriety checkpoints. Last year, the initiative led to 350 DUI arrests—twice the number from 2022—and resulted in numerous other traffic-related summonses. this is the grant breakdown for Cape May County:
· Lower: $5,250
· Middle: $5,250
· North Wildwood: $2,100
· Wildwood: $5,250
· Wildwood Crest: $2,100
Wildwood Crest Bridge Closed Indefinitely After Mechanical Failure
The Middle Thorofare Bridge, also known as the Two Mile Bridge, leading into Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, is closed indefinitely due to a motor failure that left it stuck in the upright position. The failure prevents all car, bike, and pedestrian traffic from crossing, although commercial vessels can still pass. The exact duration of the closure remains unclear, with repairs potentially taking an extended period.
Walker's Struggles Continue as Phillies Lose Grip in 6-4 Defeat to Nationals
The Philadelphia Phillies experienced a tough loss to the Washington Nationals, concluding their Alumni Weekend with a 6-4 defeat. Despite early optimism for a sweep, the game slipped away due to late-game struggles. Starting pitcher Taijuan Walker allowed home runs in successive innings, and despite the Phillies tying the game with consecutive home runs from Bryson Stott and Brandon Marsh, reliever Matt Strahm conceded the decisive run in the eighth. The Phillies had a chance to tie the game in the ninth, but Cal Stevenson hit into a double play, and Garrett Stubbs grounded out, ending the game. Manager Rob Thomson emphasized giving key players rest ahead of a demanding schedule, prioritizing long-term readiness over immediate gains. Despite the loss, the Phillies still have a strong standing in their division as they prepare for upcoming series against more challenging teams.
