2024's First Supermoon Paired with Rare Seasonal Blue Moon This August

This weekend and into early next week, the night skies will feature the first ‘Supermoon’ of 2024, which also qualifies as this year's seasonal blue moon, according to NASA. The supermoon will reach its peak illumination on Monday, August 19, at 12:25 p.m. Eastern Time, but will appear full and notably large throughout the weekend. Supermoons, which occur when the moon is closer to Earth than during a typical full moon, appear larger and brighter from our perspective. This particular full moon phase is also a seasonal blue moon, an occurrence defined by having four full moons in a single season, rather than the usual three. The term contrasts with the more commonly known monthly blue moon, where two full moons happen in a single calendar month. This year's full supermoon is also referred to as the Sturgeon Moon, a name derived from the period historically associated with the peak season for catching sturgeon in the Great Lakes.  The 2024 calendar will continue to feature notable supermoons, including the Harvest Moon on September 17 and the Hunter’s Moon on October 17, which is expected to be the largest supermoon of the year. The series will conclude with the Beaver Moon on November 15.

The Unwritten Rule Every Driver in Jersey Knows: Keep Up or Move Over

On the major highways of the Garden State, speed limits are often treated more like suggestions than actual rules. For instance, if you're cruising at 65 mph on the Atlantic City Expressway or the Garden State Parkway while everyone else is pushing 80 mph, you’ll quickly learn that staying in the right lane is the best way to avoid getting honked at—or worse.

The key to navigating New Jersey’s highways is to keep up with the flow of traffic. Longtime residents don’t appreciate drivers who clog up the passing lane by driving too slowly. Anecdotal? Maybe, but If you can't match the speed of other drivers, the right lane is where you belong. For those not in a rush, it might be wise to avoid the major highways.  Every seasoned New Jersey driver can confirm this unwritten rule: on our highways, it's all about maintaining the pace. Slow down the flow, and you’ll hear about it.

Local Love: Wildwood’s Ravioli House and Duffer's Ice Cream Share Sweet Support

In Wildwood, NJ, two neighboring businesses, the Ravioli House and Duffer's Ice Cream Parlour, demonstrated the power of community by supporting each other. A recent social media post showcased Teresa, a long-time employee at the Ravioli House, enjoying a well-deserved treat at Duffer's after a long day of work. Teresa, who has been making pasta at the Ravioli House since it opened in the 1970s, indulged in her favorite waffles and ice cream at Duffer's. The sight of her relaxing and enjoying herself at a neighboring business was a beautiful reminder of the support and mutual respect that can exist within a community. Located right next door to each other on Pacific Avenue, both the Ravioli House and Duffer's Ice Cream Parlour have been staples of the Wildwood dining scene for decades. This simple yet profound gesture of one business supporting another in their downtime is a testament to the strength and unity that can flourish even in a competitive environment.

Weston Wilson's Historic Performance Leads Phillies to Victory Against Nationals

Philadelphia Phillies' infielder Weston Wilson achieved the impressive feat of hitting for the cycle during Thursday's game against the Washington Nationals, contributing significantly to a 13-3 victory. Wilson, who had a stellar performance going 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored, secured the cycle with a crucial double in the eighth inning. This milestone made him the fourth player to hit for the cycle in 2024, joining notable players from other teams. Wilson's performance this season has been solid, with a batting average of .273 and notable contributions to the Phillies' offense. The team looks to build on this win in their continued series at Citizens Bank Park.

Eagles Edge Patriots 14-13 in Preseason Match

The Philadelphia Eagles edged out the New England Patriots 14-13 in a preseason game at Gillette Stadium. Key moments included a fourth-quarter touchdown and two-point conversion by Eagles' running back Kendall Milton, which reversed their trailing position and led to victory. For the Patriots, starter Jacoby Brissett struggled, throwing an interception in the end zone, but rookie Maye showed promise with a touchdown. Eagles' quarterback Kenny Pickett managed the pressure well, leading to a field goal, and Tanner McKee spearheaded a comeback in the second half. Noteworthy performances from Philly included rookie Will Shipley and veteran Avonte Maddox, the latter intercepting Brissett's throw. The game remained tight with the Eagles outscoring the Patriots 11-3 in the final quarter.
