New Jersey to Automatically Distribute Over 1 Million ANCHOR Tax Relief Payments
New Jersey is set to distribute automatic ANCHOR payments to over a million residents as part of its property tax relief program for 2024. The program aims to mitigate the burden of the state's high property taxes by providing up to $1,750 in rebates. With $2 billion paid out last year, the program benefits homeowners and renters alike. This year, the process has been streamlined to eliminate paper applications for most, enhancing convenience and accessibility. Additional security measures have been implemented for new applicants to protect their information. Payments will start in November. More information about the program is available at anchor.nj.gov. Applicants may also call the ANCHOR hotline at (609) 826-4282 or 1-888-238-1233, or get in-person assistance at a Regional Information Center.
Deadline Set for REAL ID Compliance in New Jersey Ahead of May 2025
Beginning May 7, 2025, travelers in New Jersey and across the U.S. will need a REAL ID-compliant card to board domestic flights and enter certain federal offices, due to new federal regulations. This REAL ID card will feature a star in the top right corner, signifying its compliance. The push for these new IDs, which include enhanced security features making them harder to forge, stems from the REAL ID Act of 2005, which was enacted in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. To obtain a REAL ID in New Jersey, residents must provide two proofs of residential address, one proof of Social Security Number, and various other identification documents totaling six points of ID, such as a U.S. passport or birth certificate. Other acceptable forms of identification for travel include U.S. passports, Global Entry cards, and more. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has streamlined the process, allowing for online document uploads, though paper applications are still available. They encourage those needing a REAL ID to make arrangements before the deadline to avoid complications in travel or accessing federal services. This transition to REAL ID does not impact activities such as voting, registering to vote, or accessing federal benefits that do not require ID verification.
Local Businesses Brace for Economic Hit After Atlantic City Airshow Cancellation
Despite the cancellation of the 2024 Visit Atlantic City Airshow, visitors like Dan and Marilyn Corradetti decided to keep their travel plans, finding solace in the minor aerial activities such as helicopters and drones that replaced the usual spectacle. The event's cancellation, announced by the Greater Atlantic City Chamber due to the withdrawal of a major act and earlier financial challenges, has left both attendees and local businesses disappointed. The airshow, which typically draws around half a million visitors, plays a significant role in boosting the local economy by millions through tourism-related activities like shopping, dining, and gambling.
Mayor Marty Small expressed hope for the event's return in 2025, emphasizing its importance to the economic vitality of the region. Meanwhile, business owners like Abdul Rauf of Beach Apparel anticipate a significant downturn in revenue, compounded by a lack of other seasonal events like beach concerts. The future of the airshow remains uncertain, with the Chamber declining to comment on its potential return next year.
Schwarber's Grand Slam Offers Momentary Relief for Struggling Phillies
After enduring a challenging period with one of the worst records over the past two months, the Philadelphia Phillies held a pivotal team meeting. Despite not officially acknowledging the meeting, the team came together to address their recent performance. In the game following the meeting, Kyle Schwarber's grand slam in the fourth inning helped snap a four-game losing streak, showcasing a potential turnaround for the team. The Phillies believe in their core group's talent and commitment, underscored by their collective effort to weather the recent struggles and improve their gameplay moving forward. Kyle Schwarber saved the day with a swing they hope will put an end to their losing ways. The Phillies loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Schwarber hit a go-ahead grand slam to left field in a 9-5 victory over the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.
