The CDC Calls them the World’s Deadliest Animal and we have Them in NJ

In New Jersey, residents are dealing with a surge in mosquitoes, labeled the world's deadliest animal by the CDC because of their capacity to transmit diseases like West Nile Virus. Various mosquito repellents, such as sprays, bracelets, and candles, are being utilized to combat these pests. The CDC recommends using EPA-registered insect repellents and taking preventive measures like wearing long sleeves and removing standing water from properties to reduce mosquito populations and minimize bite risks.

Fireflies in New Jersey Face Environmental Threats

Fireflies, a beloved symbol of summer, are facing environmental threats in New Jersey that endanger their populations. Known scientifically as beetles from the Lampyridae family, they are at risk due to pesticide use, habitat loss, and light pollution. Fireflies thrive in warm, wet conditions and are particularly fond of wetlands, which have been increasingly drained and developed. These threats not only affect fireflies but are indicative of a broader biodiversity crisis. Efforts to help include reducing pesticide use, preserving natural habitats in backyards, minimizing outdoor lighting, and participating in citizen science projects to track firefly populations. Advocacy for conserving open spaces is also crucial for protecting fireflies and other native species.

How can the Ocean be so Cold with this Scorcher of a Summer?

The dramatic fluctuation in water temperatures at the Jersey Beach, can be attributed to the phenomenon of ocean upwelling and its reversal due to wind patterns. During summer, the region often experiences strong southerly trade winds that shift from southeast to southwest. When these winds blow hard from the southeast, they drive the warmer surface waters offshore and replace them with colder, deeper waters from below, a process known as upwelling. This was evident on July 18th, 2024, when water temperatures dropped to a chilly 56 degrees Fahrenheit.

Conversely, when the wind shifts to come from the northeast, the opposite effect occurs. These winds push the warmer surface waters towards the shore, causing water temperatures to rise rapidly. For instance, within 36 hours of the previous cold spell, the ocean temperature surged back up to 70 degrees. Thus, in this coastal region, southerly winds typically cool the ocean, while northeasterly winds warm it up, with stronger winds amplifying these temperature changes.

Phillies Overcome Twins with Late Rally in Ninth

In a tense MLB game, the Philadelphia Phillies secured a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins, breaking a scoreless deadlock in the ninth inning. Zack Wheeler, returning from a break due to a sore back, pitched seven dominant innings, while Twins rookie Simeon Woods Richardson also impressed in his six innings. The game's decisive moment came in the ninth when Bryce Harper doubled, and following walks to Alec Bohm and J.T. Realmuto, Brandon Marsh's sacrifice fly and Nick Castellanos' two-run double clinched the win for the Phillies. Matt Strahm sealed the game with his first save of the season. This victory maintains the Phillies' position as having the best record in the majors at 64-37.
