President Biden Ends Re-election Campaign, Endorses Vice President Harris
President Joe Biden has announced his decision to withdraw from his presidential re-election campaign, citing it as being in the best interest of his party and the country. This decision has caused a major shift in the Democratic race for the White House, with Biden endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his preferred successor. This move comes amidst concerns within his party about his ability to continue serving effectively. The political landscape is now highly uncertain, with potential for significant changes at the upcoming Democratic convention and the general election.
Cape May Resorts Turn to Falconry to Deter Pesky Seagulls
Congress Hall and The Rusty Nail in Cape May have introduced a falconry program to deter seagulls. The initiative follows unsuccessful attempts with other deterrents.
This summer, they launched a program using Harris Hawks, trained raptors that naturally deter seagulls by making eye contact and creating an uncomfortable environment for them. Master-class falconers Paul and Peg Totten, lifelong Cape May County residents with over 30 years of experience, have been hired to handle the hawks, Chase and Lily. The presence of these hawks is enough to keep the seagulls at bay, ensuring a more pleasant experience for the guests.
Ocean City has successfully used a similar program since 2019, employing East Coast Falcons to protect its boardwalk from seagulls. The program, costing about $2000 a day, has been well-received by tourists and praised by local officials.
IRS Warns Against False Facebook Tax Credit Claims
Social media is rife with scams, and a new one has emerged. The IRS has issued a warning about a new Facebook scam advising self-employed individuals to file for false tax credits, claiming potential payouts of up to $32,000. Scammers are increasingly targeting individuals recovering from the financial hardships of the pandemic.
This latest scam follows previous misleading claims about the Employee Retention Act, which is legitimate but applies to a limited group of people.
The IRS emphasizes the importance of consulting certified public accountants or contacting the IRS directly for reliable information and not relying on social media for tax advice.
Fundraiser Supports Family of Man Who Died Saving Children in South Jersey River
Pablo Hernandez Cruz, 49, of Mays Landing, died rescuing two children from drowning at Weymouth Furnace County Park. A GoFundMe page has raised over $12,600 for his family. Cruz was known for his dedication to his family and work, having previously sacrificed his career to care for his daughter with cancer. The park, notorious for its dangerous currents, reopened the day after the incident.
Impressive Rookie Outing: Tyler Phillips Keeps Pirates Scoreless
Tyler Phillips, stepping in as the Phillies' fifth starter due to injuries within the rotation, has made an impressive start to his MLB career. In his latest outing, he pitched six scoreless innings against the Pirates, securing a 6-0 win. Utilizing his sweeper effectively, Phillips managed to keep the Pirates' hitters off balance, demonstrating excellent command by allowing only minimal hard contact. This performance follows his debut, contributing positively to the Phillies' season as they navigate injuries to pitchers Taijuan Walker and Spencer Turnbull. Walker is currently recovering from a finger issue, and Turnbull is rehabbing from a lat strain, with both working towards returning to the mound. Phillips' strong early performances have been crucial for the Phillies as they continue to lead with the best record in the majors and push towards their goal of a World Series win.
