Venomous but Not Deadly: Cownose Rays Spotted at the Jersey Shore

As beach season peaks at the Jersey Shore, beachgoers are reminded to be aware of Cownose Rays, which are currently migrating through the area. These rays, recognizable by their wing-like fins and long tails with venomous barbs, are generally harmless unless provoked. Mistaken often for sharks due to their fins appearing above water, Cownose Rays feed on ocean floor dwellers like clams and crabs and use their venom defensively, not aggressively. The sting from their barb, while painful, is not fatal to humans. To ensure safety, beachgoers should be cautious and avoid stepping on these rays to prevent any accidental injuries.

Great White Shark Spotted Off New Jersey Coast Stirs Excitement

Recent shark sightings along New Jersey's coast have stirred excitement among locals and fishermen. Notably, a possible great white shark sighting occurred 22 miles off the Atlantic City shoreline, reported by Pearson's Pursuit Inshore Fishing. The fishermen, initially hoping to catch bonito or mackerel, estimated the shark to be about 15 feet long. While it could have been a great white, it's also possible that it was a basking shark, which can grow even larger. Additional encounters include a close-up view by Mike Cavallo and his daughter near Point Pleasant Beach, and the catch and release of a juvenile great white by fisherman Travis Bogin off Atlantic City. These sightings underscore the diverse marine life off New Jersey's coast.

New Cycling Route Proposed in West Cape May to Avoid Broadway Congestion

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BAPAC) of West Cape May is actively seeking solutions to reroute bicycle traffic away from the heavily traversed Broadway area. During their meeting on July 10, Police Chief Dekon Fashaw highlighted the significant increase in bicycle traffic on Broadway and expressed a preference for redirecting cyclists to ensure safety and manage congestion. BAPAC member Robert Morris proposed the creation of a bike path along Park Boulevard, utilizing an existing dirt road that leads to Cape May’s Canning House Lane Public Works Yard. This path would extend to the Atlantic City Electric right of way, reaching as far as the Cape May Canal, potentially providing a safer and more suitable route for cyclists away from the busy Broadway area..

Phillies Struggle Post All-Star Break, Lose Three Straight

The Philadelphia Phillies are experiencing a rough start to the second half of their season, having lost three consecutive games, including a recent 4-1 defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates. This marks their first three-game losing streak since late May. Despite initial strong performances, the Phillies' offense struggled, notably going 12 innings without scoring until Bryce Harper hit a solo home run. Pirates pitcher Luis L. Ortiz effectively limited the Phillies to just three hits over seven innings, utilizing a strong mix of pitches. The Phillies, with a record of 62-36, are now focused on avoiding a sweep in their next game, while cautiously managing their pitching staff to maintain their health and effectiveness as key players like Ranger Suarez and Zack Wheeler are set to return.
