Lawmakers Urge Senator Menendez to Resign Following Conviction
Senator Bob Menendez denies plans to resign following his guilty verdict on federal bribery and corruption charges, despite increasing calls for his resignation from key lawmakers. Menendez insists that reports of his resignation talks are false. His sentencing is set for October 29. Governor Phil Murphy and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer are among those calling for Menendez to step down, with Murphy urging the Senate to expel him if he does not resign. The last removal of a senator occurred over 100 years ago.
Mayor Mullock Pushes for Takeout Businesses to Manage Their Trash
The City Council introduced an ordinance amendment requiring takeout food businesses to provide and maintain trash and recycling receptacles near their entrances to tackle the city's trash problem. Mayor Zack Mullock noted the necessity of the ordinance after failed discussions with business owners. The ordinance covers establishments serving various takeout foods, including beach concessions. A public hearing and potential vote are set for August 6.
Free Shell Recycling Program to Benefit Restaurants and Environment
The Cape May Chamber, along with the Cape May County MUA and NJDEP Fish & Wildlife, is expanding the "Shell Recycling Program" to help restaurant owners save money, reduce landfill waste, and support local oyster populations. The program collects discarded shells from restaurants and plants them onto local oyster reefs, benefiting the ecosystem. Interest is being gauged among restaurants in Atlantic and Cape May Counties. Participation in the program is completely free, with shell collection bins provided. Partnering restaurants are simply asked to separate oyster and clam shells from their regular waste stream.
Pirates Overcome Phillies in Dramatic 8-7 Ninth-Inning Victory
Nick Gonzales hit a game-winning single in the ninth inning, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-7 walk-off victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Pirates had trailed for most of the game at PNC Park but managed to take their first and only lead with Gonzales' hit. The win was particularly significant as the Pirates had been facing the team with the best record in baseball. Despite a poor start from pitcher Martín Pérez, who gave up six runs, the Pirates showed resilience. Key moments included Oneil Cruz's 120.5 mph RBI double and a strategic double steal in the ninth inning, setting up the dramatic finish. This victory brought the Pirates' record above .500 and extended their winning streak to five games, offering momentum as they approach the trade deadline during a challenging stretch of their season.
