Meteor Causes Sonic Boom-Like Noise Along the Shore

A meteor entering Earth's atmosphere at 41,000 mph was responsible for a loud boom heard by residents along the Shore, according to the Associated Press. First sighted over Manhattan at an altitude of 51 miles, the meteor traveled over Newark and disintegrated above Mountainside in Union County at 31 miles high. The event occurred at 11:17 a.m. on Tuesday and was visible as far south as Cape May County and was described by eyewitnesses as a bright, fast-moving fireball. Despite its initial size of about one foot in diameter, the meteor did not survive its passage through the atmosphere, fully burning up before reaching the ground.

Cape May City Council Takes Action Against Spotted Lanternfly

Cape May, New Jersey, is taking action against the invasive spotted lanternfly, which has been detected in the area. The city council is applying for a $20,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Agriculture to fund chemical treatments from 2024 to 2026. The lanternfly, first identified in the U.S. in 2014, is now present in 17 states and poses a threat to plant life and local ecosystems. It favors the tree of heaven, an invasive species prevalent throughout North America. City officials recommend that property owners seeking to remove the tree of heaven consult with tree experts to address its complex root system effectively.

Guatemalan man charged with kidnapping

Sergio Gomez, a 22-year-old Guatemalan man, was indicted by a federal grand jury in New Jersey for kidnapping a 14-year-old girl, taking her from New Jersey to Georgia, and planning to sexually assault her. Using the internet and a cellphone, Gomez enticed the girl and subsequently transported her on July 30, 2023. After she was reported missing the following day, a joint effort by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, the FBI, and Georgia police led to her rescue on August 3, unharmed. Gomez and another man, Yester R. Montecillos-Vazquez, were arrested in Georgia, both facing charges related to luring and conspiracy to lure a child.
