Severe Storm Hits Cape May, City Hall Struck by Lightning

Friday morning, a severe thunderstorm swept through Cape May County, causing significant disruption, particularly at Cape May's City Hall.

The storm brought torrential rainfall that flooded numerous city streets, overwhelming the municipal flood pumps. Despite their activation, the pumps couldn't keep up with the heavy downpour. Additionally, multiple lightning strikes hit various buildings on Cape Island, including Cape May City Hall. In response, all of Cape May's emergency services, including Fire, Police, OEM, Fire Police, and DPW, were activated.

Fortunately, no other buildings were damaged, and there were no reported injuries. However, the storm did cause power outages across the county. Due to the lightning strike, Cape May City Hall remains closed while damage assessments are conducted. The building is expected to reopen for normal business hours on Monday.

Further complications may arise as more storms are predicted for South Jersey this weekend. Cape May closed its beaches Friday in anticipation of expected storms and the possibility of more today.

Cape May Fishermen Win Supreme Court Battle Against Federal Regulations

Three Cape May herring fishermen have achieved a significant victory at the U.S. Supreme Court, overturning the long-standing Chevron doctrine. This decision facilitates challenging federal regulations in court. However, their battle continues as they contest an imposed requirement to pay for at-sea monitors, a cost that can reach $700 daily, exceeding their own earnings at times.

This requirement was set by the U.S. Department of Commerce, overseeing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), without Congressional approval. The controversial Chevron doctrine, established in 1984, required courts to defer to federal agency interpretations of ambiguous statutes, limiting the fishermen's ability to contest the rule.

Chief Justice John Roberts stated that agencies lack special competence in resolving statutory ambiguities, a role better suited for the courts. The Supreme Court's decision allows the fishermen to continue their fight against the at-sea monitoring rule in the Washington, D.C., circuit court.

Philadelphia Phillies Release Whit Merrifield Following Loss to Athletics

The Oakland Athletics defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2, surprising the top-ranked Phillies with a solid performance despite the A's struggles this season. Lawrence Butler and Shea Langeliers were key players, with Butler hitting a two-run homer and Langeliers driving in two runs. The A's took advantage of Phillies pitcher Ranger Suárez’s recent form downturn, scoring all their runs against him with two outs. Suárez, who had started the season strongly, has seen his ERA rise significantly in his last three starts. The Phillies made a notable roster change by releasing Whit Merrifield due to underperformance and recalled Weston Wilson, who played left field in the game. The Phillies, coming off a sweep of the Dodgers, faced a setback in this series opener against the last-place A's.
