CDC Warns of Rising Dengue Fever Cases, Including 42 in New Jersey
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an alert regarding a significant increase in dengue fever cases worldwide, including in New Jersey, where 42 infections have been recorded. Dengue fever, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is typically found in tropical climates but has seen a record 9.7 million cases globally this year. The virus can be particularly dangerous, potentially causing severe symptoms like high fever, severe headache, and in extreme cases, severe bleeding and shock.
In New Jersey, the individuals infected contracted the virus while traveling to areas where dengue is more common. The CDC notes that while dengue is transmitted by a tropical mosquito, which has been occasionally detected in New Jersey, it is unlikely to establish a permanent population due to the state's moderate climate. Nevertheless, the potential for local transmission exists if local mosquitoes bite an infected person. Public health officials recommend taking precautions such as using EPA-registered mosquito repellents and wearing protective clothing to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
Phillies Edge Dodgers 4-3, Strahm Recalls Career Highlights
Matt Strahm, a veteran pitcher and first-time National League All-Star, recently reflected on a memorable career moment from 2016 when he faced David Ortiz. Now, years later, he experienced a similarly tense moment pitching against Shohei Ohtani in a crucial game against the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park. Strahm successfully struck out Ohtani with a masterful slider, contributing to the Phillies' narrow 4-3 victory. The game was a tight matchup between two top National League teams, enhancing the Phillies' position with a chance to sweep the series. Strahm's performance was a highlight, demonstrating his growth and confidence in high-pressure situations, reminiscent of his early career challenges.
